Angela Cordero said her dog Leia was "unjustly shot and killed" by Officer David Santos around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15, Cordero said on Facebook

Santos claimed to be responding to as traffic violation on Cordero's street when Leia ran toward him. While Brockton Police said Santos was trying to protect himself from harm, Cordero disagrees.

"I know my dog and I know if she was going over to him it was never in a vicious manner," she said. "Something needs to be done. His actions were not okay and they were not justified."

Cordero has yet to get a direct response from police regarding the incident, but the department did release a statement defending Santos' actions.

“A dog ran toward a police officer on Hermon Street shortly before 10am on Thursday," NBC Boston reports. "The officer discharged his firearm at the dog to protect himself from injury. The incident is under investigation."

Cordero plans on using her story to demand justice for Leia.
